Hauz Khas

Hauz Khas combines a historic reservoir with the remains of a madrasa, mosque and tomb complex in South Delhi. Its strongest appeal is the relationship between water and architecture: buildings overlook the tank rather than standing as isolated monuments. A slow circuit makes that relationship easier to appreciate than a brief photo stop.

Discover Hauz Khas

The reservoir originated in the period of Alauddin Khalji and was restored under Firoz Shah Tughlaq, whose buildings reshaped the site. The surviving complex recalls Islamic learning as well as royal patronage. Treat the surrounding modern neighbourhood and the protected monuments as separate parts of the visit.

Places to explore

  • Hauz Khas Reservoir

Originally associated with the water needs of Siri, the tank establishes the setting and long views around which the later buildings developed.

  • Firoz Shah’s Tomb and Madrasa

The tomb forms a focal point in an L-shaped group overlooking the water, linking funerary architecture with the former centre of learning.

Suggested sightseeing plan

Use this as a starting point. Adjust the sequence to your interests, access arrangements and local conditions.

  1. Suggested start: explore the madrasa and Firoz Shah’s tomb, noticing how their openings and alignment relate to the tank.
  2. Suggested continuation: move to permitted reservoir viewpoints, then leave time for a separate walk through the surrounding neighbourhood.

Planning your visit

  • Follow the designated monument paths and avoid climbing walls or sitting on fragile edges above the reservoir.
  • Confirm which entrances connect the monument and waterside areas before assuming that every visible path forms a continuous public circuit.
