Gurez Valley

Gurez is a mountain valley in northern Kashmir where the Kishanganga River and the distinctive Habba Khatoon peak shape the scenery. Its settlements and landscape offer a different experience from the main Srinagar resort circuit. The journey requires current local planning, and a destination description should never be read as confirmation that roads or visitor access are open.

Discover Gurez Valley

JKTDC describes the valley’s river, mountain skyline and traditional wooden houses, with Habba Khatoon’s name connecting the landscape to Kashmiri literary tradition. The most useful visit focuses on permitted viewpoints and respectful engagement with inhabited places. Longer excursions should be planned only after discussing the actual route with local authorities or tourism information channels.

Places to explore

  • Habba Khatoon peak viewpoints

The distinctive mountain is the valley’s best-known named landscape feature and is associated with the memory of the Kashmiri poetess.

  • Kishanganga River landscape

The river runs through the valley and helps define its settlements and scenery; viewing it does not imply permission for water activities.

Suggested sightseeing plan

Use this as a starting point. Adjust the sequence to your interests, access arrangements and local conditions.

  1. Suggested sequence: establish a locally confirmed base and permitted sightseeing plan.
  2. Explore the river landscape and Habba Khatoon viewpoints without overloading the journey with speculative detours.

Planning your visit

  • Confirm road status and any current visitor permissions with district tourist-help channels shortly before travel.
  • Respect restrictions on routes and photography, and avoid assuming that an attractive side valley is open to visitors.
