Shillong

Shillong is a useful base for exploring the Khasi Hills, but its own surroundings deserve time before a longer road journey. Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak show two contrasting sides of the landscape: water descending through a wooded setting and a broad view from above, when clouds allow.

Discover Shillong

Keep the city day geographically manageable instead of combining every famous Meghalaya attraction into one circuit. The waterfall involves walking and steps, while the peak has its own access arrangements. A flexible order makes more sense than a fixed photograph schedule, especially when hill weather changes during the outing.

Places to explore

  • Elephant Falls

The waterfall is a recognised stop in Meghalaya Tourism's Shillong itinerary, with the descent and return walk forming part of the experience.

  • Shillong Peak

This hilltop viewpoint offers a wider perspective on Shillong and its surroundings when visibility permits; check the current visitor access arrangements first.

Suggested sightseeing plan

Use this as a starting point. Adjust the sequence to your interests, access arrangements and local conditions.

  1. Suggested start: make Elephant Falls the main walking stop, allowing time for the return ascent rather than rushing between viewpoints.
  2. Then: continue to Shillong Peak only if access and visibility are suitable, leaving the remaining time for a relaxed return to town.

Planning your visit

  • Wear footwear suited to wet steps at Elephant Falls and choose how far to descend according to your group's comfort.
  • Confirm identification and access requirements for Shillong Peak before leaving the city, since a viewpoint visit is not automatically assured.
