Mandawa

Mandawa is one of Shekhawati’s painted towns, where merchant houses and a fort reflect the region’s trading history. Its appeal is concentrated in the details of walls, facades and courtyards rather than a large collection of unrelated attractions. A slow heritage walk is therefore a useful way to approach the town.

Discover Mandawa

The official tourism account links Mandawa’s development to traders who established decorated havelis around the fortified settlement. Paintings vary between buildings, so look for differences in subject, technique and condition. Some structures have changed use; seeing a facade from the street does not imply permission to enter every courtyard or room.

Places to explore

  • Mandawa havelis

The town’s merchant houses are recognised for painted surfaces and elaborate architectural details, best appreciated through close observation during a heritage walk.

  • Mandawa Fort

The fort forms an important part of the settlement’s history and provides context for the town that developed around it.

Suggested sightseeing plan

Use this as a starting point. Adjust the sequence to your interests, access arrangements and local conditions.

  1. Suggested sequence: start with an overview of the fort and the surrounding settlement.
  2. Continue on foot through selected haveli streets, allowing time to compare the painted facades.

Planning your visit

  • Ask permission before entering a privately used haveli or photographing people inside residential spaces.
  • Choose a small set of accessible buildings and avoid touching painted surfaces or deteriorating decorative work.
