Yuksom

Yuksom holds an important place in Sikkim's history as the setting for the coronation of its first Chogyal. The surviving coronation-related site and the uphill approach to Dubdi Monastery offer a manageable cultural introduction. The village is also associated with mountain trekking, but heritage walking and an expedition require very different preparation.

Discover Yuksom

Give the historic landscape enough time to connect individual remains with their wider story. The route to Dubdi adds a physical element, so choose footwear and a pace suited to the group. A trek into the Khangchendzonga region should be arranged separately, with the applicable permissions, guides and equipment.

Places to explore

  • Yuksom Coronation Site

The site recalls the coronation of Sikkim's first Chogyal and provides a starting point for understanding the village's political and religious history.

  • Dubdi Monastery

The monastery above Yuksom is reached on foot, combining a heritage visit with an uphill walk through the surrounding landscape.

Suggested sightseeing plan

Use this as a starting point. Adjust the sequence to your interests, access arrangements and local conditions.

  1. Suggested start: explore the coronation site and use available interpretation to understand why Yuksom is significant in Sikkim's history.
  2. Then: walk to Dubdi Monastery if the route and group are suited to it, returning to the village before considering any larger trekking plan.

Planning your visit

  • Ask locally about the current Dubdi approach and allow time for the return descent rather than estimating the visit from road distance.
  • Trekking beyond the village is a separate undertaking; confirm route permissions and support instead of treating it as an extension of sightseeing.
