Tungnath

Tungnath is a Shiva shrine in the Panch Kedar tradition, approached on foot from the Chopta area. The temple and its mountain surroundings are the main purpose of the journey. Chandrashila lies farther along the ascent and should not be treated as part of every temple visit.

Discover Tungnath

A useful plan centres on the walking stage rather than the road arrival alone. Seasonal temple access and the condition of the approach need confirmation. Religious significance gives the journey meaning, while the mountain setting calls for a pace suited to the least comfortable person in the group.

Places to explore

  • Tungnath Temple

The shrine is linked in Panch Kedar tradition with Shiva's arms and is the devotional focus of the trek.

  • Chopta approach landscape

Meadows and mountain views form the setting of the ascent, with the experience varying according to weather and visibility.

Suggested sightseeing plan

Use this as a starting point. Adjust the sequence to your interests, access arrangements and local conditions.

  1. Suggested sequence: organise the approach from Chopta and focus on reaching and returning from Tungnath comfortably.
  2. Spend time at the shrine when accessible, then prioritise the descent over adding another summit.

Planning your visit

  • Confirm the temple and trail situation locally before treating the route as open.
  • Consider Chandrashila only after a separate assessment of weather, daylight and personal capacity.
