Manas National Park

Manas protects a landscape where Himalayan foothills meet alluvial grasslands, forests and river channels. UNESCO recognises the wildlife sanctuary at the heart of this wider protected area. The appeal is the habitat as a whole: changing vegetation, river scenery and the possibility of observing animals without expecting any particular species.

Discover Manas National Park

The Manas River also marks part of a landscape that continues into Bhutan. A visit on the Indian side does not include permission to cross the international boundary. Build the itinerary around an authorised park excursion, and use the approach and return to appreciate the transition from settled areas into protected forest.

Places to explore

  • Manas Wildlife Sanctuary

The UNESCO-listed sanctuary supports threatened wildlife within a mosaic of grassland and forest, forming a core part of the wider Manas protected landscape.

  • Manas River Landscape

The river and its shifting channels help shape the protected habitats, with wooded Himalayan foothills providing an important setting to the north.

Suggested sightseeing plan

Use this as a starting point. Adjust the sequence to your interests, access arrangements and local conditions.

  1. Suggested start: arrive at the confirmed park access point and check the day's route and visitor instructions before entering.
  2. Then: explore the approved forest and grassland circuit, including river scenery only where the authorised route allows, before returning to your base.

Planning your visit

  • Confirm the permitted gate, route and activity with the responsible park authority or authorised operator before arranging your transfer.
  • Observe wildlife from the authorised vehicle or trail, following local instructions; the presence of rare species never guarantees a sighting.
