Leh

Leh is both a historic town and an important starting point for journeys through Ladakh. The former royal palace and Shanti Stupa provide different views of its architectural and religious landscape. Arrival should begin with an appropriate acclimatisation plan rather than an immediate attempt to combine every monument with a high mountain excursion.

Discover Leh

The palace’s substantial hillside structure contrasts with the stupa’s open elevated setting. Both help visitors understand the relationship between the town and its surrounding mountains. The official Ladakh advisory calls for at least forty-eight hours of rest after arrival in Leh before travelling higher; sightseeing plans must work around that guidance rather than displace it.

Places to explore

  • Leh Palace

The former royal residence is a major example of the town’s historic architecture, with rooms and viewpoints that explain its commanding hillside position.

  • Shanti Stupa

The stupa stands on a hill above Leh and offers a distinct religious and landscape experience once the visit is appropriate for the traveller.

Suggested sightseeing plan

Use this as a starting point. Adjust the sequence to your interests, access arrangements and local conditions.

  1. Suggested sequence: use the initial stay for rest and orientation according to official guidance.
  2. After acclimatisation, plan the palace and stupa as separate, comfortably paced heritage visits.

Planning your visit

  • Follow the current official acclimatisation advice and seek medical help promptly if unwell at altitude.
  • Do not schedule high passes or distant lakes as automatic arrival-day additions to a Leh transfer.
