Nubra Valley
Nubra is a broad Ladakh valley region whose appeal comes from the contrast between cultivated settlements, monasteries and cold-desert scenery. Diskit and Hunder are important visitor centres, but they are separate places within the region. An itinerary should therefore choose a clear base and allow time to experience the valley beyond a single dune photograph.
Discover Nubra Valley
The district tourism guide identifies Hunder’s sand dunes and Bactrian camels, Diskit’s Maitreya Buddha landmark and Panamik’s spring area among the region’s features. For a first visit, the Diskit–Hunder pairing offers a coherent focus. Adding farther places changes the journey substantially and should follow current route and visitor guidance.
Places to explore
Diskit
The main regional town is associated with a prominent Maitreya Buddha landmark and provides a useful cultural focus within Nubra.
Hunder sand dunes
The dunes and double-humped camels create a distinctive cold-desert scene, contrasting with the valley’s inhabited and cultivated areas.
Panamik spring area
Panamik is another named valley destination and should be treated as a separate extension rather than a stop automatically included with Hunder.
Suggested sightseeing plan
Use this as a starting point. Adjust the sequence to your interests, access arrangements and local conditions.
- Suggested sequence: choose a base and explore Diskit’s cultural setting.
- Continue to Hunder, keeping more distant valley extensions for a separately planned outing.
Planning your visit
- Check current route permissions and road status for the precise Nubra circuit you intend to follow.
- Follow Ladakh’s acclimatisation guidance before crossing high passes or extending the journey.
