Gangotri
Gangotri's temple to Goddess Ganga stands in a mountain town beside the Bhagirathi. The sacred river setting and nearby Bhagirath Shila provide the focus for many visitors. Gaumukh, associated with the glacier source, is a separate trekking destination and should not be confused with the road journey to Gangotri.
Discover Gangotri
Distinguish the pilgrimage town from a longer mountain expedition. Time beside the river helps explain the religious landscape without requiring an extended trek. Current yatra instructions, route conditions and any permissions need checking for the intended date, rather than being inferred from a general description of the destination.
Places to explore
Gangotri Temple
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and forms the centre of the town's devotional and pilgrimage activity.
Bhagirath Shila
The rock near the temple is associated in Hindu tradition with Bhagirath's devotion and the descent of the Ganga.
Suggested sightseeing plan
Use this as a starting point. Adjust the sequence to your interests, access arrangements and local conditions.
- Suggested sequence: begin with the temple and sacred river setting, allowing time for an unhurried visit.
- Keep any further mountain excursion on a separately assessed plan with a clear return arrangement.
Planning your visit
- Use official yatra information for current local movement and access instructions.
- Do not treat Gaumukh as an automatic extension; establish its separate route requirements first.
